Meet Gabby

Gabby Headly is a Guyanese-American ceramicist who creates functional homeware. Gabby was first introduced to pottery through hand building in 2016 at Howard University. 

She quickly fell in love with the intrinsic meticulousness of creating ceramic art. In 2017 she studied throwing in Osaka, Japan while completing her minor degree in Japanese. 

In the Spring of 2019, Gabby facilitated several art therapy workshops in collaboration with Howard University’s Ceramics Department.

That Fall, she returned to Japan and began studying Southern Japanese ceramics styles like Hita Onta-yaki, as well as Koishiwara-yaki and Hasami-yaki from Fukuoka and Nagasaki prefecture, respectively. 

In the fall of 2020 she begin studying kintsugi (金継ぎ) under Hidekazu Aizawa, the sole successor of the Hita lacquerware tradition (日田漆器). 

In June 2021 Gabby launched Megami, a functional ceramics line that seeks to inspire mindfulness through our relationships with the objects that add beauty to our lives. These works debuted in her first solo exhibition entitled Setsuna, which ran through June 17th to June 28th, 2021.

Gabby is currently based in Fukuoka City and is studying to become a kintsugi specialist at the Hakata Lacquer Art Institute (博多漆芸研究所).
